Record Of The Week 10/23

My LP Of The Week has me on the edge of a precipice.

Fontaines D.C. released their 5th studio LP in just 7 years last Friday.

FONTAINES D.C. “Dopamime Chamber” (XL- 2026)

The Dublin City crew are on the cusp of a breakout. They are gaining swaths of supporters which each release.

“Dopamime Chambet” will further their moment. Their songwriting is brilliant, as always. Their sound is modulating – becoming much less guitar and angst sounding.

I first lost my mind over this Festive 15 artist in my collection with the track “Televised Mind” from their sophomore release, “A Hero’s Death” in 2020- a pandemic stalwart for me.

I am now afraid that I might “lose” this outfit to massive hype and hubris that is mishandled…

There are artists that become and I stay the course in terms of music and integrity. I offer NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS 🇦🇺 🇬🇧, NEW ORDER 🇬🇧 (through 2007), DOVES 🇬🇧 and THE CURE 🇬🇧 as artists I have continued to respect and collect after they became “arena- worthy.”

On the other hand I saw U2 🇮🇪 perform live at two small venues in the early 80’s. I thought “I Will Follow” forever until Bono declared himself to be the messiah. I stepped of that train then for good.

Many of you have heard of my passion for SIMPLE MINDS 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 through their first 4 LPs. I saw them play brilliantly at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit on the “New Gold Dream 81-82-83-84” tour. They came on and played for about 1 hour. Just the music, thanks.

Then, a year or so later, they became globally recognisable for “Don’t You Forget About Me” from the movie “The Breakfast Club.”

When they came onstage for the next tour, Lead Singer, JIM KERR, spend an inordinate amount of time preening and glad- handing the punters in the mosh pit. Screech.

At gigs end I stood at the front row of the balcony were we were sat at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, MI tossing $1 bills to the floor below in protest of these guys selling out. New Gold Dream indeed.

Anyway, as FONTAINES approach this level of interest, here is hoping they stay grounded.

A few weeks ago (Post #730) I featured a single, that has become my fave track- “Marianne.”

Today, let’s go with the third single – “Japan”. It’s a more melodic tune that will captivate you. Here it is. Stay grounded lads…

“Why did you go and make it real indeed.”
