The Joys Of Record Collecting!

From Instagram

I saw this on Instagram this past weekend. The timing was perfect for this post.

I was making my weekly (at least) visit to my local indie record store DR. DISC last week to check out the new releases. Nothing hit home as a must have so I wandered over to the rack of newly released records and began flipping through them whilst chatting with proprietor and group member LIAM.

I rarely find something I need [Ed. Note- translate that to “want.”] but it doesn’t stop me from looking, especially when I have not obtained any new releases.

I was inanely flipping through the rack and seeing nothing but copies of mostly 70’s stuff that I never listened to then and have no interest in now. I was about 5 records from the back of the 50 or so records in the bin and thought about ending the tedious run through the worn copies of Journey, Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Foreigner and the like when BOOM!

There it was.

A mint condition white vinyl copy of the LP “Halcyon Digest” by DEERHUNTER 🇺🇸.

DEERHUNTER- “Halcyon Days” (4AD- 2010)

This band is fronted by BRADFORD COX. In addition to the body of indie music he has contributed, he is also known for having Marfan syndrome and acting. He played “Sunflower” the AIDS suffering boyfriend of JARED LETO’S character, in the powerful and award winning 2013 movie “The Dallas Buyers Club.”

Although I have posted this song before (and while the entire LP is choice), I have to return to my favourite track for today’s post.

I purchased this album on CD the day it was released. (It was during a period (1987 – 2020) that I mostly acquired CDs.)

Just a couple of weeks later I spent 70 hours over 4 days negotiating for a client. After a final all-nighter and settlement (Friday into Saturday afternoon) we left that very evening for London 🇬🇧. I was so jacked up from a lack of sleep that I could only listen to this song on repeat the entire flight. Hours and hours worth.

Notwithstanding that overdose of the song, I still love it- especially what group member DANIEL VICTOR of NEVERENDING WHITE LIGHTS 🇨🇦 tells me is a normal chord progression.

To me there is nothing normal to me about this song.

It would be a C90 candidate for me. That is, if I had to leave planet earth and could only take a single 90 minute cassette, this song would likely be included.

The song was written by band member LOCKETT PLUNDT.

The song is “Desire Lines.” I hope you enjoy it even a fraction of what I do. I am now thrilled to own this track and the LP in white vinyl!!

I am going to start with the studio version on YouTube, but I highly recommend you watch and listen to the extended live version that follows.
