MUSCLING INTO THE INDIE MUSIC SCENE?

Pick the outlier from these notable indie music destinations? Manchester, Seattle, London, Berlin, New York, Glasgow, Montreal, Austin, Brighton, Sheffield, Muscle Shoals…

The outlier

The answer is easy. The explanation, not so much.

Muscle Shoals is a city of approximately 16,000 situated in the northwest corner of Alabama.

It is located just south of Tennessee and about 80 miles from Tupelo, Mississippi- the birthplace of Elvis.

It has a rich music history. However that history references Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Wesson Pickett, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and many more. In fact, from about 1965- 1980 it was actually called the “Muscle Shoals Sound.” The list goes on but it does not contain any indie artists.

SISTER RAY DAVIES is a newish outfit that is actually hails from Muscle Shoals. The band name is considered a “portmanteau” as it blends the name of a famous Velvet Underground 🇺🇸 song “Sister Ray” with the name of the Kinks 🇬🇧 singer “RAY DAVIES.”

The duo is comprised of ANDREW MORROW and JAMIE SEGO.

The make shoegaze/ dream pop music and record for the British indie label Sonic Cathedral. (One of my favourite labels.)

Their debut LP is called “Holy Island.”

The band is touring the UK in April. Regrettably I will not be there in April but hope to catch them live this year because am obsessed with this LP and, in particular this week, the song “Iona”. Here you go. Enjoy and let me know what you think.
