Etymology And The Need For Paracetamol

Odd title for a post here at gwrex365. I am keen on the topic, of Etymology but not some of the outcomes.

“Etymology” is the study of the origin, development and the usage of words over time. I find it fascinating. Words and phrases can come into our orbit and leave in a lifetime. I took some linguistics courses as an undergrad.

There are two words/ phrases that are under my skin presently.

Baseball season is upon us. It is my favourite sport but I am getting more and more disillusioned each year at the disproportionality of finances in teams.

But I digress. In years past when a player got 3 strikes, the announcers called it a “strikeout.” Occasionally a you would hear them say “Nolan Ryan has 11 Ks tonight.”

That’s not good enough today.

Now, every time a player gets 3 strikes, it is now a “punch-out.” Everything is a punch-out. After a while it becomes very cloying.

I am punched out on the use of “punch out.”

The other annoying thing now is a phrase, not a word.

With the Middle East war into its’ second week all of the talking heads on the news are asking/ commenting on the possibility of debate on the issue of “boots on the ground.”

Enough Already

Urgggghhh.

Once maybe. But the incessant use of that phrase is driving me wild.

Maybe it is just me, but enough of that imagery. Enough.

It is giving me a headache. I need some relief. Enter the second half of the topic.
