THE AUSTIN INDIE SPIRIT (#8- North Loop Variation – a 3 song Long Sunday Read)

One last post (maybe, but might have to do one on the food) for this recent visit to Austin, Texas. Remember, the town motto there is “Keep Austin Weird.”

One of the many areas of Austin that is striving to live up to that sentiment is where Meghan and Kaled live- North Loop.

It is an older area populated with bungalows, great shops and the spirit of both social and artistic independence in harmony with what we are doing here at gwrexu/g365.

Not 5 minutes from their residence are a series of cool bars, restaurants, vintage stores (and more) in what is called “The North Loop Business District.”

Another day on North Loop

To the east on North Loop is We♥️ Video (See post 847 where I introduced you to attorney RYAN TEEL- a founding member of this DVD/ Video co-operative.)

There is also Tigress, their favourite neighbourhood (dive) bar and Meg’s favourite vintage store- Stitches.

At I sat in Stitches while Kimberly and Meghan browsed, I saw this amazing coffee table book that was “not for sale.”

“Vinyl World by Marcus Caspers (published by teNeues) (photo taken on rex’s coffee table)

The book narrates a brief history of vinyl. Check out this pic fr the book of a perfect listening room…

Nearby is my favourite North Loop residence.

I have featured this house before at Post 847. However I had to come back to show it again because many of you were not in the Group then and I hadn’t noticed this on the sidewalk in front of the house as I was too busy snapping pictures of the art.

The truck is called Bluetiful

Log on and you will be taken to a great little site that gives a history of the travels of this vehicle as far away as Burning Man in Nevada through to the “Crash”-

If you are intrigued you can to to bluetiful.jimhateswork.com for the full story and even make a donation…

Just a few steps to the west is a small L-shape plaza with a barbershop, vintage store and two of the most important places in my orbit- a superb coffee shop spot and a record store high on my list anywhere.

The java comes from Epoch Coffee which is open 24-7.

On the inside of the L is this gem:

Breakaway Records (same address)

It was here in 2024 I first met this musician and good guy SEAN.

SEAN LOCHRIDGE holding a copy of “No Guitar” by CURLING

SEAN works at Breakaway when he is not otherwise fully immersed in the music business. He was the drummer for Frosty Palms 🇺🇸 before their singer moved to Philly.

FROSTY PALMS (Uncanny Valley Of Delight” – (Self released- 2024)

He is about to start drumming for two bands. One of them is named CURLING 🇺🇸

CURLING – “No Guitar” (No label- 2023)

The bands are very much the clarion for DIY music.

He has also started a cassette label entitled “Bedroom Investigation Commitee.” You can find it on Instagram @bedroominvestigstion-committee.

A page from his Instagram. Check It Out

Sean also does a great job curating new music for me. On this trip he introduced me to a gem of a record that had somehow slipped my attention.

GUITAR (MICHAEL LÜCKNER)
“Sunkissed” (2002 and re-issued by P- Vine- 2025)

Here are 3 tracks brought to you by SEAN to get you through this Snowpocalypse Sunday.
