THE AUSTIN INDIE SPIRIT #7 (Road Trip)

[Ed. Note- rex apologizes for not posting yesterday but it just wasn’t a good day for much of anything, including a glib music post.]

Kool- Aid week continues today with a narrative about our recent day trip to Waco Texas.

Yes, Virginia, that Waco.

Waco is almost only known former base of apocalyptic polygamist, David Koresh, Kool- Aid disciple and leader of the Branch Dividians until 1993. His reign ended when the compound was attacked 51 days into a siege conducted by ATF (Bureau Of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.) [Ed. Note – rex has memories of doing collective bargaining in Chatham for a client the day it ended and watching on tv as he and his client waited most of the day for the union to review a proposal.]

But enough about that sadness and craziness. We are only about indie music, respect, quirkiness, friendship, love and more indie music here at gwilliamrexunderground365.com.

We started the day at a classic Austin breakfast spot- Mercado Sin Nombre. (Market Without Name.) This space is located in an alley in East Austin.

Their World famous Masa Twinkie. Hey, it’s vacation and it is made with corn…

Then it was off to Waco with a stop at the Worlds greatest gas station on steroids- Buc-ces.

Eventually, we arrived in Waco to explore the famous “Silos at Magnolia” – made famous by TV stars Joanna and Chip Gaines.

I was more interested in seeing the first skyscraper built west of the Mississippi. It is a 22 storey building constructed in 1910 by the ALICO Insurance Company (American Amicable Life Insurance) and still used by the company. In 1953, it survived a monstrous tornado that levelled most buildings. Today it is designated as a Texas Landmark.

After that we wandered a bit and I saw this sign on a law firm that caused me to do a double -take:

No comment necessary

However, I was buttressed against that cynicism by a random visit to a record store we walked by after lunch.

Meet Armando Mío, proprietor of Vintage Mío Records and Things

Armando has a goal in operating this new store. The number above him of 45, 273 represents the amount of money the store has contributed towards a variety of causes, starting with human trafficking. Bravo to you Armando.

Check out what he is doing on his social media.

I purchased two LPs. One of them was by SUFJAN STEVENS.

SUFJAN STEVENS- “Avalanche” (Asthmatic Kitty Records- 2006.)

This is an LP of outtakes from his seminal 2005 LP “Illinois”.

Here is “Dear Mr. Supercomputer”. I hope you enjoyed this little Kool- Aid travelogue.
