Excellence In Design- The Midlands Series (Vol. 3/4)

Sometimes you just know a place is for you. You can’t always put it in words, but you just know that it is.

And so it was the instant the car pulled into the secluded property of DAVID MELLOR DESIGN in the town of Hathersage, Derbyshire, U.K.

The compound is situated just west of SHEFFIELD 🇬🇧

Group member Kristen was showing Kimberly and I around Sheffield on June 24, 2025. Knowing our interest in American architect and designer FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, Kristen this was the one destination she had penned in our itinerary. It was a brilliant idea.

[Ed. Note- rex has concluded that what Wright is to architecture and design, Mellor is to metal working.]

All designed by David Mellor

I won’t go on at length about the remarkable design career of DAVID MELLOR but am providing this link to their website if you want to explore.

We had a brilliant time exploring the property, the plethora of products for sale (buying some), having lunch and meeting JARVIS COCKER! [Ed. Note- that was posted on July 27, 2025 for any of you who possibly missed it.]

After our stomachs were full, and wallets less so from our purchases, we went out to gaze through the windows into the structure designed by noted architect SIR MICHAEL HOPKINS to manufacture cutlery from an abandoned gas works here in the Peak District National Park.

A few minutes later, CORIN MELLOR, the son of David wandered by and greeted us. He immediately invited us in for a tour of the facility even though the facility is only open to tour on limited times.

CORIN MELLOR explaining the operations to Kristen and Kimberly

I was effusive about just meeting JARVIS COCKER and CORIN not only told us about how well he knows he and his wife, but he told a story about taking his 20 year old son to his first concert recently. The gig featured one of my favourite artists, Goth legends THE SISTERS OF MERCY! That made today’s choice of artist easy…

I have selected one of my favourite SOM songs partly for its use of an industrial setting and mostly because like everything about DAVID MELLOR DESIGN it is brilliant.

P.S.- Thank you for the hospitality CORIN. We will return as there were many items we still need to purchase.

Here are some we acquired:
