Dueling Tunes (1 of 2)

Welcome to Gary, one of the newest members of our little Group.

Gary resides in New Jersey. He also has strong connections to Japan (and Canada).

Those ties made me think instantly of my favourite bands from the Garden State and the Land Of The Rising Sun.

In Part 1 (of 2) we will focus on New Jersey. [Ed. Note- tomorrow Japan 🇯🇵]

THE FEELIES were formed during the USA’s bicentennial anniversary in 1976 and are still going.

Since their debut LP “Crazy Rhythms” in 1980, they have released a total of 6 studio LPs over various periods of activity.

THE FEELIES – “Crazy Rhythms”
(Stiff Records – 1980)

Heavily influenced by the sound of the seminal band, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND*, this band has punched way above their weight. They have influenced many bands, that far outweighs their commercial success.

[* Ed. Note- They released a live LP in 2023 of a gig where they played only VU songs.]

They also notoriously appeared in the classic 1986 JONATHAN DEMME movie “Something Wild” starring JEFF DANIELS, RAY LIOTTA and MELANIE GRIFFITH. They played as The Willie’s, a high school band. Here is a clip from the 5 songs they perform, including BOWIE.

“Something Wild” (Orion Pictures – 1986)

For my song selection, I have to go to my favourite.

THE FEELIES “The Good Earth”
)Coyote/ Twin/Tone -1986)

Taken from the PETER BUCK (R.E.M.) produced 2nd LP, “The Good Earth” here is “Slipping (Into Something)” first live and then with the studio version on Spotify-
