SARAH STORIES (Sketch #5 – Part 1)

[Ed. Note- As many of you know one of rex favourite labels is SARAH RECORDS.

This fiercely independent label was founded in Bristol UK 🇬🇧 by CLARE WADD and MATT HAYNES. Between 1987 and 1995 SARAH released 7” singles (almost 90) as well as 4 fanzines, and 29 LPs (of which 7 were 10” records.

rex counts 35 artists that recorded on SARAH. Today marks the 5th of those featured outfits. The format today is a bit different as you will see and hear.]

A number of artists that were on the SARAH label have had sustained musical careers over these years. For example, THE ORCHIDS 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, ST. CHRISTOPHER 🇬🇧 and rex faves SECRET SHINE 🇬🇧 come to mind.

There also the bands that have carried on successfully with different names such as those fronted by BOBBY WRATTEN 🇬🇧 (Field Mice, Northern Picture Library, Trembling Blue Stars and Lightning In A Twilight Hour.)

As well the married duo of AMELIA FLETCHER and ROB PURSEY guided the band from TALULAH GOSH and HEAVENLY to Marine Research, Tender Trap, then onto Cantenary Wires and SWANSEA SOUND today.

In that vein, let me introduce you to a SARAH band that had a short shelf life. Part 1 comes today.

THE SWEETEST ACHE [Ed. Note- Isn’t that one of the best band names who have ever heard?] hailed from SWANSEA, WALES 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿.

THE SWEETEST ACHE- “Jaguar” (1992) SARAH 608

They recorded one LP entitled “Jaguar” in 1992 on SARAH, along with 3 singles.

A second LP (“Grass Roots”) was released on Vinyl Japan and then the band mostly vanished. But more on that soon…
