Whether music, art, movies, food and his all-round outlook on life, rex leans into the indie way.

One place that rex has visited regularly that exudes indie as much as anywhere is Austin, Texas.

Being there this July again visiting his daughter, rex had enough indie experiences that he has decided to run a new series entitled “THE AUSTIN INDIE SPIRIT.”

No one exudes the indie spirit more than my eldest daughter, MEGHAN. Today is her birthday and so it is fitting that this little series starts with a celebration of her day and her indie spirit,

After graduating from the University of Toronto, MEGS went off to the University of Texas, Austin in 2017 and earned a Master of Science in Architectural Preservation in 2019.

After a stint at an architectural firm in San Francisco that ended due to the pandemic, she returned to Austin where she still resides.

She works for the non-profit PRESERVATION AUSTIN that works to preserve the architectural heritage of the City.

On visits to Austin such as HAYDEN and I made this July MEGS (or MEGHAN LONGHORN as I refer to her in recognition of her alma mater) has curated many of the amazing indie things I will be featuring in this series.

She has selected a song 9 years her elder. It is an all-time indie classic recorded by THE THE. [Ed. Note- Ironically, MATT JOHNSON and his band are about to release their first studio LP in 25 years next month so the timing is fitting.]

The song contains my favourite piano solo of ANY song in my collection. It was co-written/ performed by JOOLS HOLLAND of the band SQUEEZE. He is more well known for his long- running music show called “Later With Jools Holland”.
