NOW EAR THIS! I AM TRULY SORRY. (THE APOLOGY TOUR PART I)

Please believe me when I tell you I was just being my glib self.

I departed on July 13 with son Hayden to Texas. There were two main motivators for the trip- Firstly, it was to attend the MLB Homerun Derby on July 15 while making our 1st visit to Globe Life Park AND spend time with daughter Meghan at The Derby and then in Austin, TX. where she resides.

Now, as background to this mea culpa, you need to know (as many of you do) that I do not like soccer.

[Ed. Note- That is a huge understatement.]

I find soccer a sport fueled by alcohol and jingoism. I find it horrifically boring.

Nil happens.

Nil happens a lot.

Occasionally a goal is acrobatic. The injuries fakes are worthy of wrestling highlights.

The use of the clock is unchanged since the days of sundials. The penalty kick set up is ridiculously anti- climatic for a game where goals are a rare event.

Anyway, I could go on but that would make this post just like a game of soccer…

We had some time to kill on the 13th, so I suggested tickets for the 3 of us to attend FC Dallas host Los Angeles Galaxy at Toyota Field in Frisco, Texas.

For perspective, the last time I attended a North American Soccer League game was in New York in 1980. [Ed. Note- rex and BMan left that Seattle Sounders v New York Cosmos early in the 2nd half bored out of their gourds.]

Before departing this time I announced to friends and colleagues “If you look out of your front window Saturday night and it looks like the earth is splitting apart like a walnut being cracked open at Christmas, blame me because you will know I actually went to a soccer game…”

Ha Ha Ha…

Or so I thought…

Meghan Longhorn, Hayden Michael and rec for at Toyota Stadium- July 14, 2024. I didn’t know it until we entered the stadium but they were celebrating “Christmas In July at the game. We each received a necklace comprised or working XMas FC Callas Christmas lights…

Consider this.

1. We were less than 10 minutes from the stadium when Hayden looked at his phone and blurted “Donald Trump has been shot!”

2. While the Homerun Derby was fantastic on the 15th, the woman performing the anthem was so drunk she checked into rehab the next day…

3. A day or so later it was reported that Joe Biden had contracted COVID.

4. This was the news on Wednesday the 17th…

5. While in Austin on July 19, we awoke to news that there had been a global computer meltdown caused by a cyber security firm called CrowdStrike. Where is CrowdStrike headquartered? You guessed it- Austin..

6. Because of that computer madness, Hayden and I sat from 9am to 5pm at Dallas airport on July 20 before our flight to Detroit was cancelled. It was just a mere 3 hours more of madness to get my luggage back for the night….

7. On Sunday, whilst sitting in our hotel room contemplating whether I should just rent a car and just drive home, Joe Biden posted on X that he was X.

8. Our flight back on the worst performing airline during the meltdown, Delta, mercifully left Dallas at 1am local time on Monday, July 22 and arrived in Detroit at 4:30 am…

Just sayin’…

Anyway, I think the SOCCER HEX is over as a bunch very “good stuff” happened this past week. Having said that, I do apologize for all the grief and imbalance I most surely caused by going to a bloody soccer game…

If asked, I can now proudly say I am an FC Dallas fan!
