THE FIRST ANNUAL “UNDERGROUND365” AWARD!

Today marks another completed trip for me on The “CIRCLE LINE” around the sun so I thought it was high time that this low-brow project handed- out an award.

In that spirit and with full admiration I present the 2023 gwilliamrexunderground365 Award!

The Criteria

Given the date on which this award is announced, there are THREE criteria to be evaluated.

1. The person or band must have a solid discography of indie/ post- punk/ electronic/goth music in my collection.

2. A unique standing in the history of the music and culture I love.

3. A personal quality or other factoid that deems the candidate or outfit to be sufficiently “underground”.

Name The Award

I needed a suitable yet kitschy and disfunctional name for this not-so prestigious award.

The answer was obvious.

I give you the “Undie Award”

The First gwilliamrexunderground365 “Undie Award”

The Selection

Notwithstanding that I have over 3,000 artists in my collection, the inaugural choice was actually easy.

The UNDIE goes to none other than JAH WOBBLE.

The Reasons

1. WOBBLE has been making incredible music for over 45 years. He was the founding bassist for PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED and played on their first two seminal LPs- “First Issue” and “Metal Box”.

“Metal Box”- 12” records tightly fitted in a movie cannjster type metal box.

2. WOBBLE’s discography is vast and varied covering many styles of music to varying degrees of success. He has collaborated with over 50 other respected artists.

3. Tipping the scales for the first UNDIE AWARD is the fact that JAH WOBBLE (real name – John Wardle) incredibly worked for a number of years starting in 1987 as a train operator for THE LONDON UNDERGROUND.
