The Perfection of Imperfection

This may sound a bit wacky but it is my opinion that it takes great skill and effort to create art that is truly, thoroughly and undeniably bad.

This thesis may be most applicable to those making movies or tv.

Case in point. Saturday, I took DJDrew to see a movie that was so utterly horrible I actually enjoyed and admired watching it unfold.

[Ed. Note- Spoiler alert to the so-called plot etc. of this masterpiece of bad moviemaking.]

The Expend4bles was that movie. My, it was gloriously bad. Perfectly so. It had everything you could ask for in a bad movie- a true piece of bad cinema.

It starts with the obligatory bad macho/ sexist acting from a deep cast of the usual suspects- Stallone, Stratham, 50 Cent, Lundgren and Fox (Megan).

It had plot utterly and instantly predictable plot twists That is, nothing was as it appeared. The good guy was the bad guy. Staging your death in a plane crash is nothing but an essential plot device.

A person jumping out into the open to shoot a rifle or pistol is a far more accurate and effective shooter than the 20 or so machine gun firing opponents positioned behind barriers.

I could go on but I know you have lives to lead. You know my excitement level is palpable now.

DJDrew summarized the movie perfectly when I asked. He answered “Explosions, action.” He later added “guns and triggers.” Interestingly, he was not referring gun triggers but the nuclear bomb triggers the Expendables were purportedly tasked with recovering.

[Ed. Note- All right rex. Enough already. What does this have to do with today’s song.]

Well, I thought about an equally perfect bad song that would entertain you this Tuesday am. While having a coffee with group member Pam M. yesterday the talk covered a bit of music, and British singer Jarvis Cocker. And then it hit me.

Many of you will remember the band PULP from Sheffield fronted by JARVIS. After years of a modicum of success, despite great music, they became overnight indie sensations with the release of their 1995 LP, “Different Class.”

In particular, their catchy pop song ‘Common People’ became a hit.

Just to remind you, here is a video of the song

Sanitized version of ‘Common People’ video. [Ed. Note the phrase edited is “dance and drink and screw because there’s nothing else to do…”

A brilliant song and social commentary. [Ed. Note- Factoid- rumour has it that the actual Greek student that was the subject of the song later became the wife of the Greek Finance Minister when that country went bankrupt about 8 years ago…]

However, this is hardly the stuff of perfect “bad art.”

Enter CAPTAIN KIRK, er rather Canadian 🇨🇦 actor WILLIAM SHATNER, trying to escape the “KIRK” albatross by branching out where he had no business.

WILLUAM SHATNER – Captain of bad music

Go on Spotify and you will be stunned how much music this guy has recorded. Surreally, this include a cover of ‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie. Stunned.

Here is his version of ‘Common People. It is so hideous, it is perfect…

Believe it…
