the The

[Ed. Note- For the uninitiated, today’s title is not a typo.]

Londoner 🇬🇧 MATT JOHNSON has been making thought provoking indie music mostly as frontman of THE THE since the late 1970s.

At times he has operated solely. At others he has had luminaries such as ex SMITHS guitarist JOHNNY MARR in the band. Such was the lineup when I first saw THE THE play in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1990.

The LP “SOUL MINING” (1983) is in my personal LP Hall of Fame. [Ed. Note- Especially the North American version which included the fantabulous ‘Giant’ song to the original UK track listing.]

Anyway, it is the latest release by Matt Johnson that we focus on today. Group member and THE THE maven DJ JONJON bagged me the limited edition 7” copy of ‘$1 One Vote.’ (Thank you pal.)

It is classic THE THE. A clever, cynical and musically superior track in my humble opinion. The lyrics are no less biting than 40 years ago!

Take a listen and see if you agree. [Ed. Note- I don’t think Matt is actually related to his namesake you are thinking about at the moment. Just sayin’.]

Firstly, here is the “promo” for the single on Johnson’s RADIO CINEOLA label. After that, the song
